IN-ATTESA

Mediterranean Sea-2022/ongoing

IN-ATTESA in Italian means both “on hold” (in attesa) and “someone that is not welcomed or expected” (inattesa).

The rescue operations. This is the first image that comes to mind when we think of a rescue ship in the Mediterranean. The rescue is in fact, just one of many pearls in a much longer necklace. Waiting has been, in my experience, the majority of those pearls that follow and precede the rescue.

One waits for the go-ahead from the Port Authority to leave. One waits to reach the SAR (Search and Rescue) zone. One waits to spot boats or to receive an SOS. In an indefinite time, dilated and restricted by tiny spaces and the open sea. Then the rescue. Excited moments that can last hours but are remembered in the mind as a matter of seconds. And then it starts again. One waits in the SAR area waiting to figure out if more boats are in danger. One waits to reach the coast. One waits for a signal bar so that he can finally tell to his family that he is alive. One waits for a port of safety to be assigned.

One waits to set foot in the longed-for Europe where, for many of them, the time of waiting will begin a new cycle.
