A place to call C.A.S.A.

When in 1947 the C.A.S.A. (Cementeria Apuana Societá Anonima) reopened its doors in Carrara, it is the years of reconstruction and the “economic miracle.” The reaffirmation of the working class, prosperity, housing benefits, and the guarantees of inherited work do not foreshadow the downward trajectory that will begin within a few decades. On December 10 2008, after years of progressive staff reduction, the cement plant will officially close its doors, putting an end to its industrial and business history, leaving traces in the territory and in the lives of those who worked there.

“A place to call C.A.S.A.” is a family investigation of job loss when The Self and the work become identified. In the background is the crisis of industry in Italy and specifically the Carrara cement plant, once called Cementeria Apuana Societá Anonima, C.A.S.A. precisely.

Quando nel 1947 la C.A.S.A. (Cementeria Apuana Societá Anonima) riapre i battenti a Carrara, sono gli anni della ricostruzione, e del “miracolo economico”. La riaffermazione della classe operaia, la prosperità, i vantaggi abitativi, le garanzie del lavoro tramandato di padre in figlio non lasciano presagire la parabola discendente che comincerà nel giro di qualche decennio. Il 10 dicembre 2008 dopo anni di progressiva riduzione del personale, la cementeria chiuderà ufficialmente i battenti mettendo un punto alla sua storia operaia e aziendale non senza lasciare tracce nel territorio e nella vita di chi vi ha lavorato. 

“A place to call C.A.S.A.” é un indagine famigliare sulla perdita del lavoro quando il s`è ed il lavoro si identificano. Sullo sfondo, la crisi dell’industria in Italia e nello specifico la cementeria di Carrara un tempo chiamata Cementeria Apuana Societá Anonima, C.A.S.A appunto.
